Black Witch Moth 2021

I found a female Black Witch moth on the Bolivar Flats in Texas. Females have a pale band in their wing pattern and are generally larger than males. Working from life, I painted its beautiful colors and patterns at a grand scale on a piece of cardboard. There’s something uncanny that happens with the folds of the cardboard and the wing structure; it implies a kind of folding and flying.
