HARMONICS

The piece is part of a series inspired by birdsong called HARMONICS. The paintings reflect the sonic exuberance of the ecosystem. Made by arranging foraged plants and natural dyes on muslin fabric, which is rolled and then boiled in a bundled dyed technique to create a repeating pattern reflective of the spectrograms of the vibrant trilling songs of many of the representative birds of the sagebrush-filled habitat of northeast Nevada, where this series began. The marks creep and soak, suggesting a surface in motion or a kind of aliveness. The muslin material can have a see-through quality that captures light and hints at the internal stretcher bar structure, a counterpoint to the lyrical compositions. Her work is often a meditation on the form in such a way as to be past what is materially exact, something less knowable, but akin to the fact of beauty we find in organic life.
