FreshKills Park, NYC 2019-25

Cyanotype on muslin

48x36in

In the summer of 2019, with the support of the Freshkills Park Alliance, I was able to access Freshkills Park at night to conduct a mothing. This image was created from that mothing session.

I love the floating rectangle shape made by the transparency negative during solarization. For me, this geometry alludes to a window, the structure playing off the constellation of the moths.

Freshkills Park is a public park being built atop a landfill on Staten Island. Development of the park began in October 2008 and is slated to continue in phases for approximately 30 years. Wildlife is already responding to the environmental changes. Freshkills, in its natural state, was primarily tidal creeks and coastal marsh. It is an exciting project, and the steps already taken have seen a positive impact with birds, fish, and mammals thriving in creeks and grasslands.
