WILDSCAPE
Marigold + Rose 2020
Marigold, rose petal, acrylic, and ink on canvas
20x16in
Living in NYC, I got a hot tip that someone had collected the floral arrangements from a large wedding and was giving the spoils to artists. I biked over and picked up a large bag of roses and marigolds! I boiled down the roses, making a pretty dye, and bundled dyed this muslin fabric with the marigolds. I kept some flowers whole to use as the brushes and collaged elements of this piece.
WILDSCAPES are made using plants as tools and brushes. The materials are pressed and flicked onto muslin or wild silk after dipping in a combination of natural dyes I make, acrylic paint, ink, and water. The paintings reflect the exuberance of the plants and flowers. The muslin has a see-through quality that captures light and hints at the internal stretcher bar structure, a counterpoint to the lyrical compositions.
