Virgin Tiger Moth 2023

Ink and acrylic on muslin

32x32in

Tiger Moths. There are many kinds of Tiger Moths. There are several that are difficult to tell apart when their wings are closed, and just their elegant, graphic black and tan pattern is visible. However, the underwings give clues to identity, and the bright red color and near heart-shaped black spots of the Virgin Tiger Moth help us name them. These moths appeared regularly during my mothing sessions at Skowhegan in the summer of 2023, where I made this painting.

Moths are a conduit to explore light, color, form, and texture. Flowing acrylic creeps and soaks, suggesting a surface in motion or a kind of aliveness. A meditation on the form in such a way as to be past what is materially exact, something less knowable- but akin to the fact of beauty we find in organic life.

The wood support enunciates the shape of the moth, the geometry slightly exaggerated as a counterpoint to the soft flow of the paint.
